NETTLE SMOOTHIE - HOLISTIC HAY FEVER HEALING

NETTLE SMOOTHIE - HOLISTIC HAY FEVER HEALING

I am currently researching holistic ways to tackle hay fever. Last year mine was awful. I hate relying on pharmaceutical medicines. Antihistamines are OK occasionally, the body quickly builds an intolerance though, and the previous administered amounts that worked no longer will. Antihistamines have also been linked to dementia.

To help beat hayfever bad fats and processed sugars should be avoided along with cows milks.

A diet rich in fruit and vegetables will help lots. Vitamin C is particularly useful a high dose between 2000-3000 mg will completely rid some people of allergies, spread consumption throughout the day.

I always promote good nutrition over tablet vitamins but they have there place.

Foods rich in vitamin C Oranges Kiwi fruits Red and green peppers Strawberries Blackcurrants Broccoli Brussels sprouts Potatoes

So here's my smoothie recipe made with nettles which are now in season, and free!!

Pick the top 8 leaves and remove stalks. Sieve your drink if your blender isn't very efficient.

1 cup of washed nettles

1 cup of blueberries

2 cups of water

2 small oranges / nectarines

Small handful of red / black grapes

10 walnuts

Directions - Blend all until smooth.

Nettles are amazing. They are in season currently (March -April UK). They are fantastic for allergies including hay fever and asthma. You can make delicious nettle soup, smoothies, teas, and pestos. You can use nettles as you would spinach, great in curries, pasta dishes or just wilted as a side dish.

Years ago they were used on the elderly to help promote blood flow, great also for arthritis. (Please dont go pushing granny in your nettle patch!)

Blueberries, grapes and oranges I added for their vitamin C content. Pick darker grapes for highest nutrients.

Walnuts are full of good fats which help reduce inflammation, a recent German study found those with a diet high in omega 3 fats had the lowest incidences of hay fever.

Here's a few extra tips to help with hay fever.

Drink camomile tea a great way to recover from a bad hay fever bout, or inhale camomile oil.

Vaseline around the nasal passages helps catch the pollen before it gets into the body.

Wear sunglasses to reduce eye puffiness.

Keep windows closed at night.

Any tips you want to share I'd love to hear.
