Meadowsweet is generally best picked in July (UK).

Pick on a dry day.

Habitat: Marshes, streams, ditches and moist woodland. It can aggravate hayfever so take caution when picking, (I personally would drink the tea to build up immunity if this is a problem for you).

The creamy flowers have been used for centuries as a flavouring for syrups, beers, wine and lots of other things. They are strong smelling, overpowering to some.

A sweet summer smell, it has been described as a similar smell as TCP by some.

I haven't long been acquainted with this amazing herb. The list of its uses will most definitely impress you!

A treatment for stomach acid issues like, heartburn, gastritis and stomach ulcers. It is a natural antacid, anti bacterial, and anti inflammatory.

Long used like aspirin, in fact aspirins name come form the old Latin name for meadowsweet "Spiraea". Similar results from Meadowsweet are reduced fever and pain-relief. Unlike aspirin meadowsweet is a gentle on the stomach (great for soothing diarrhoea), you may or may not be aware aspirin can cause stomach ulcers and pain. (Anyone with intolerances to aspirin should use meadowsweet sparingly at first, as similar reactions may occur).

Can be used to treat cystitis, urethritis, and help break down kidney stones.

A relaxant and can help aid peaceful sleeping.

To relieve a headache a compress can be applied to the head, or tea consumed.

Useful for gout sufferers or any joint pain issues like arthritis.

Harvesting:

Pick meadowsweet flowers and leaves. Spread onto a flat surface for a while to let any little black bugs escape, then dry indoors. Once completely dry crumble into small pieces and store in jars in a dark cool place.

To make the tea:

Use a teaspoonful of the dried herb in a mug of boiling water. Best made and covered whilst sitting to keep aroma.

Drinking before meals will help stomach issues. Up-to 3 cups a day for joint problems and pain.

To make a Meadowsweet rub:

Ingredients:

One packet of organic pure butter

6 meadowsweet flower heads

Directions:

Melt the butter in a pan, simmer for 15 minutes. Remove the bubble foam off the top and discard. Leave the butter for a few minutes then strain. You basically want the middle liquid layer. In a fresh pan put the ghee and meadowsweet on a gentle heat for around 10 minutes. Strain and keep liquid in sealed jars.

Uses:

Great as a heating, pain relieving rub. Helps, sciatica, painful joints, arthritis and back ache.

Meadowsweet liquid medicine

Directions:

Pick meadowsweet flowers. Let any insects escape, then fill a jar with the flowers. Pour a solution of vegetable glycerine (60%) with water (40%) over the flowers. Keep the jar on a sunny windowsill. Stir the mixture every two days. After two weeks strain, bottle the solution, and then label.

Dosage:

1 teaspoon, 3 times a day for stomach issues (indigestion, heartburn, excess stomach acid, gastritis, hiatus hernia, arthritis, stomach ulcer, rheumatism). Second dose after an hour if required.
